Asbestos is a natural mineral composed of thin fibers. When residential construction products made with asbestos are damaged, those fibers become airborne and could pose a danger to anyone who inhales the toxic dust.

While not found in newer homes built with modern building codes, earlier homes or offices built before 1990 in and around Edmonton can be suspect. Because it is airborne and not easily seen, asbestos can be dangerous. When disturbed because of construction demolition, remodeling, or maintenance, it can break asbestos down into fine particles and remain in the air for long periods of time. These particles can be easily ingested or inhaled by people living or working in the affected area.

If you’re living in an old house or working in an old building, it’s essential to find out if there’s asbestos present. You will never know unless someone tells you or you get your premises inspected.

Areas of potential asbestos contamination that are commonly identified include:

  • Drywall compound
  • Plaster walls
  • 9×9 floor tiles
  • Lino black mastic (adhesive)
  • Ceiling tiles
  • Stucco – glass rock

Asbestos removal in your home can be dangerous and must be addressed by an abatement expert. Shield can help. Things to look out for:

  • If your building was built before 1990, there’s a high chance that most of the building materials used during construction contained asbestos.
  • Inspect your flooring to see if you have vinyl flooring, which is likely to contain asbestos.
  • Before 1990, grey or white asbestos was used to insulate pipes. Check your pipe insulation as it may contain old insulation.
  • If you have old ceiling tiles, there’s a chance that they contain asbestos.
