The most important piece of advice we can offer

When it comes to mold and asbestos problems in your home or business, the primary concern is airborne spores or fibers. Unfortunately, this is NOT a DIY situation. If you discover or suspect a problem, especially if your home was built before 1990, here are some important things to consider:

DO NOT attempt to remove or tear down the affected areas. This may unintentionally cause spores and/or fibres to become airborne.

DO NOT dry out areas using fans. The moving air will cause spores sitting on the surface to be introduced into the surrounding atmosphere.

DO call a mold and asbestos remediation specialist.

Why you should consider a remediation specialist

Hiring an abatement company, and not doing it yourself, is the wisest and safest decision when it comes to removing asbestos from any residential, commercial, or public building. The process will involve rigorously testing for contamination, following strict abatement regulations and processes, and use of the right equipment and procedures to keep you safe.

Asbestos – Reasons for testing a structure

Although asbestos-containing products are generally safe when left undisturbed, they become brittle over time and can crumble. However, the popularity of do-it-yourself (DIY) projects has heightened possible asbestos exposure.

  • Before starting DIY renovations on homes or structures built before 1990.
  • Observation of crumbling, worn or broken asbestos containing materials.
  • After a natural of man-made disaster that disturbs building structures.

The Shield Remediation approach

A Shield remediation project begins with a certified inspector who takes samples of suspected contaminants. Samples are analyzed at a laboratory to determine extent of the problem. Removal can be complex and includes several site preparations. Depending on the severity of the problem, here are some things you can expect at your site:

  • Work area established.
  • Furnace shutdown.
  • Decontamination enclosure systems installed.
  • Seal openings with plastic sheeting and duct tape.
  • Wet wipe or use a vacuum with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter on non-movable objects to keep asbestos from becoming airborne.
  • Seal non-movable objects with plastic sheeting and duct tape.
  • Cover surface not getting abated with plastic sheeting or remove completely.
  • Post warning signs that read: Danger, Asbestos, Cancer and Lung Disease Hazard, Authorized Personnel Only, Respirators and Protective Clothing Are Required in this Area.
  • Clean up using a HEPA vacuum.
  • Disposal of waste in sealed in leak-tight containers while still wet, then labeled clearly and taken to qualified landfills that have specific requirements for securing the waste and preventing fibers from escaping into the air.
  • Third party environmental consultant site monitoring.

Why is abatement important?

If damaged materials and surfaces are not safely removed, they can endanger your life and the lives of others who come into contact with spores, asbestos dust, fibers, or raw asbestos materials.

If you suspect asbestos or mold contamination

  • Don’t’ sweep, vacuum, dust or force dry surfaces or debris.
  • Don’t remove suspicious materials.
  • Keep children out of the area.
  • Limit activities in the area.

Customer Testimonials

5/5
Hi Todd, just wanted to let you know we didn't end up getting the house. The sellers were unwilling to come down in price despite the cost of what fixing the foundation cracks would be. That being said we were very impressed with your teams work and will be using you in the future once we find another place we want to put an offer on. Thanks again!
